Description

Clinicians, teachers, and parents working and living with children who have experienced developmental or complex relational trauma are deeply familiar with its symptoms of emotional dysregulation, dissociation, self-destructive behaviors, social isolation, rage, and fear. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that focuses on a client's brain-wave patterns and “trains" them to operate at different frequencies. Over time and with dedicated usage, neurofeedback aims to optimize the rhythms of the brain and the body, calming fear, improving alertness, and increasing overall regulation.

While there is a growing body of research that has shown that neurofeedback may be helpful at alleviating the symptoms of a wide range clinical issues, including developmental or complex relational trauma, many clinicians and caregivers are not aware of its potential benefit as an adjunct treatment to psychotherapy. We have the great fortune of learning about this modality from an expert not only in neurofeedback but in attachment disorders as well. Sebern F. Fisher, MA, is an immensely experienced practitioner and international trainer on the integration of neurofeedback and psychotherapy, offers us a rich window into neurobiological theory, attachment disorders and developmental or complex relational trauma.

Sebern became oriented to neurofeedback through her own use of this tool, and began to integrate neurofeedback and psychotherapy within her private practice. Her cutting-edge book, Neurofeedback in the Treatment of Developmental Trauma: Calming the Fear-Driven Brain is rooted within this work. The book has been lauded a groundbreaking and a must-read for clinicians involved in the treatment of trauma disorders. Whether you are familiar with neurofeedback or not, Sebern's clinical insights deepen our understanding of neurobiology and the brain-mind interaction.
